Introduction to Chile business exploration programme

Entrepreneurial abilities, international orientation, ability to cooperate, alliances and cultural management are factors that are relevant in the creation of an environment that promotes business innovation while respecting traditional values. One of the key aspects in the determination of competitiveness is entrepreneurial culture, which additionally receives strong influence from several other factors such as the possible knowledge that we could have on the future. Our ability to value ignorance, the unknown, our ability to humble accept certainty and to take into account the probable. History shows that success by no means is a guarantee for the future, especially in those cases in which business environment is undergoing such accelerated and permanent changes. Quite the opposite, a success story can prevent change, and blind those involved. So, this is an invitation with no guarantee to opens the eyes and to see with and open mind. It is an invitation to a navigation trip to explore in an unknown sea of business information towards new worlds; it is an invitation to discovery. It is an invitation to find new ideas or new forms to develop old and known ideas in a different and distant business environment. This is an invitation for explorers that are not seeking for safety but for great opportunities in Chile.

The most difficult barrier against such an open navigation trip as it is the presentation of ideas that may stimulate prospective investors whom may seek in Chile opportunities for creative business, is precisely its sheer openness; this becomes even more oppressive when considered the atavistic tendency to measure everything as against formidable constraints: such is our way of devising or even imagining projects. Once overcome this obstacle the question is: how can one frame the possible horizons for potential advantageous projects in Chile?

Since no answer can fully satisfy such question a provisional and imperfect attempt may be to point to certain aspects, which may resist an impassionate and objective analysis. Depending on the field in which prospective investors are focussed this could be a short or a long distance navigation trip exploring the vastness of business opportunities that could be found in the relatively fertile and unexploited business frontier in the south west of South America.

The first one “unexplored wealth” considers the territory itself as a form of wealth since Chilean territory is vast, varied, complex and lightly occupied. Certain landscapes are held as precious and unique in character to yet unimagined prestigious settings.

The second one, “thematic lines”, considers certain natural attributes, which may suggest innovative forms of wealth: these are part of the Chilean natural environment that opens a new sense of wealth.

The third one “cultural and political advantages” dwells upon certain social, cultural or political traits that may favour Chile as a centre of activity that may assume the representation of the continent in some specific aspect.

1. – Unexplored wealth: the territory

Despite increasing occupation of the territory large tracts of the country are free and unoccupied: this is true for the extremes but also for large areas within reach of the main cities, where a pattern of occupation has resulted in the almost exclusive colonization of the valleys.

2. – Thematic lines

Certain possibilities are linked to the geological, geographical and climate amongst other conditions of the country, in addition certain lines of production or exploitation have acquired a national or international importance over the last years. These suggest the possibility of centres or settlements, which become specialized for the development of a particular line of research or production.

Such is the case of well known areas of production that are an actual priority in Chile representing at the same time a good proportion of its assumed economic strength within the international markets. These comparative strengths could be found in areas in which comparative natural advantages are becoming competitive advantages and the world’s knowledge had poured given the activity a clear identity.

3. – Cultural and political advantages

As a well-organised and stable country, Chile offers optimum conditions as legal and economic platform for the development of business in Latin America and due to the free trade agreements, which the country has signed with most of the major world economies, this concept can also be extended to them. This strategic advantage suggests development programs to attract the representation of institutions on international interests in the region setting up parent offices to meet the defined area of these institutions in Chile. In addition, the cultural strengths are expressed mainly when it comes to companies or investors mainly from European countries and some comparative advantages, in particular in the agrifood businesses, allow a company to build competitive advantages in products produced in the country but with destination to international markets.
